An extremely uncommon Rackham title, unrecorded in Latimore and Haskell. The novel was originally published in 1878, and was the first time the expression "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" had appeared in print. Octavo. Frontispiece and 7 plates by Rackham. Original printed pictorial wrappers, titles to front cover cream and black, advertisement endpapers. Housed in a custom brown quarter morocco and linen slipcase and matching chemise. Pencilled ownership inscription to title page. Front and rear joints partly split, a little tape at spine ends, text block partly separated from spine panel at front hinge, internally fresh; a very good copy. Riall, p. 60.
