The South West Prospect of the City of Exeter.

BUCK, Samuel & Nathaniel.

  • Published: 1736 , London.
London., 1736. From 1726 to 1742, Samuel Buck (1696-1779) and his brother Nathaniel published an ambitious series of collection of perspective views ("antiquities") in the counties of England and Wales. From 1728 they worked on a parallel project, producing long prospects of all the cities, sea-ports and county towns, usually marketing their town prospects in sets of six. Though the Buck brothers were not the only ones producing views of antiquities and town prospects in the eighteenth century they were much the most prolific. Collectively their engravings provide us with an indispensable record of what English and Welsh towns looked like before the industrial revolution. Size: 430 x 857 mm. Copperplate engraving with later hand colouring. Good condition. Split and repair to upper centrefold.
