Hyde Park Hotel, Knightsbridge, 21 June 1911. Single sheet, written on both sides, 180 x 130 mm, on Hyde Park Hotel headed paper. Old folds, otherwise very good. Writing after a period abroad, Cust apologises for his delayed reply before warmly congratulating the recipient upon seeing his name in the newspapers. He remarks that no one knows better than himself how thoroughly the recognition was deserved and adds that he is especially pleased that one of "our profession" has been publicly acknowledged. The recipient is Claude Jenkins, the Lambeth Palace librarian and ecclesiastical scholar, whose work connected with the preparations for the coronation of George V, in particular with the orders of service, received public recognition. Sir Lionel Cust was one of Britain's foremost art historians and museum curators, serving as Director of the National Portrait Gallery from 1895 to 1909 before becoming Surveyor of the King's Pictures to Edward VII and George V. .
