original letter. BRITTAIN, Thomas Arthur (1848-1935). Autograph Letter Signed from Vera Brittain's father.  single sheet folded to four pages, 150 x 110 mm, written on the first and final pages on headed Atherstone House, Sidmouth Road, Newcastle, Staffs. notepaper, dated 29 January 1892. Folded both vertically and horizontally with some light soiling to the final page and minor handling wear, overall good. A business letter to Charles J. Blagg concerning the return of a cheque and papers relating to a trust. Brittain explains that he had initially declined to sign the cheque because no satisfactory explanation had been given as to the purpose of the payment, but, following clarification, returns it duly signed.  Thomas Arthur Brittain was a prosperous Staffordshire paper manufacturer and the father of the writer, nurse and memoirist Vera Brittain (1893-1970), author of Testament of Youth. The Brittain family home and upbringing would later be immortalised in Vera Brittain's autobiographical writings, making surviving family correspondence of enduring biographical interest. . Good.
