original letter. TITCOMB, John Harford (1831-1902).  Autograph Letter Signed to the Rev. H. Brass, on the eve of sailing to Burmah to be the Bishop of Rangoon. Woking, 11 December 1877. Single bifolium, written in ink on the first and second pages; original folds. Light creasing from folding; trace elements of mounting to the rear, very good. A letter written shortly after Titcomb's appointment as Bishop of Rangoon, referring directly to the offer of the bishopric and to his imminent departure: "the moment the Bishopric was offered me. We are in dreadful confusion, as we sail on the 29th inst." The letter concerns practical arrangements before sailing, including family matters and the transfer of books and school affairs.  John Harford Titcomb had been Principal of the CMS College, Calcutta, before his elevation to the episcopate in 1877, serving as Bishop of Rangoon during the formative years of Anglican missionary organisation in British Burma.  .
