Poster for The Great Dictator.

CHAPLIN, Charlie.

  • Published: 1940 , Leila Arts for 20th Century Fox,
Leila Arts for 20th Century Fox,, 1940. Charlie Chaplin in his greatest role An original poster for Chaplin's most famous and certainly most timely film, his first in true sound, stridently condemning and satirizing dictatorship, fascism, anti-Semitism, and Nazism. The left of the poster features stills from the film, showing Chaplin in his roles as both the dictator Adenoid Hynkel and as the Jewish barber, alongside the love interest (played by Chaplin's wife Paulette Goddard), and the Mussolini caricature Benzino Napaloni (Jack Oakie). The right plays on the famous scene of the dictator kicking around the globe. The film was advertised using multiple poster designs; all are scarce, but this format is especially so. Offset lithograph, 1,020 x 749 mm, mounted on linen and card backing, 1,072 x 799 mm. Restoration and infill to loss around earlier central creases, yet still a presentable example of a scarce poster.
