The author (1845-1932) was a missionary sinologist resident for 54 years in China, including in Tianjin and Tongzhou. The half-title has the ownership signature of Robert Alexander Currie, an employee of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service from 1886 to 1925. He retired at the senior rank of commissioner. Octavo. Calligraphic Chinese on half-title. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt and decorated in yellow, front cover lettered in yellow with gilt pagoda vignette, decorative endpapers. Binding somewhat worn, free endpapers consolidated at inner hinges, contents evenly toned: very good.
