Treaty of Peace between the State of Israel and the Arab Republic of Egypt.

ISRAELI-ARAB RELATIONS.

  • Published: 1979 , [Washington, DC:]
[Washington, DC:] , 1979. The normalization of Egyptian-Israeli relations The rare trilingual form of the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty. The original document was issued to the signatories in triplicate, and mimeograph copies, reproducing the text and signatures, were circulated to institutions. This copy was formerly held in the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the stamps of which appear on page 7 of the Hebrew text. In the wake of the Camp David Accords of 1978, the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt was concluded between Presidents Sadat and Begin and witnessed by Jimmy Carter. The treaty normalized relations after 30 years of hostilities and accorded mutual recognition of sovereignty. Furthermore, it mandated the Israeli withdrawal from the Sinai and guaranteed unhindered passage for Israeli shipping through the Suez Canal. Supplementary letters included in this volume lay out President Carter's vision for what would become the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), the international peacekeeping force which still operates in the eastern Sinai. "If the [U.N.] Security Council fails to establish and maintain the arrangements called for in the Treaty, the President will be prepared to take those steps necessary to secure the establishment and maintenance of an acceptable alternative multinational force". This happened in 1981, after it became clear that the USSR would veto the plan in the Security Council. Quarto. Contemporary green sand-grain cloth, hole-punched, ribbon ties. Mimeographed typescript text in English, Arabic, and Hebrew. Covers rubbed and bumped, corner of front cover chipped, front pastedown worn, some leaves detached and loosely inserted. A good copy.
