Chase's comedy of errors centres on the eccentric Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend, a púca resembling a tall, white rabbit. The play premiered on Broadway on 1 November 1944, running for 1,775 performances. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama the following year and was adapted into a film in 1950, starring James Stewart. This trade edition was preceded by an acting edition, issued in small numbers in 1944. Provenance: Clive Hirschhorn (b. 1940), the film and theatre critic for the Sunday Express for over three decades, with his 1992 ownership inscription on the front pastedown. Large octavo. Illustrated throughout by R. O. Blechman. Original grey cloth, spine and front cover decorated in pink. With dust jacket. Tiny bumps to covers, light wear to extremities; jacket moderately rubbed, spots of restoration to spine and extremities, small faint stains, flaps without price as issued: a very good copy in good jacket.
