London: Printed by William Bowyer; and Sold by Robert Gosling,, 1726. First edition of this essay on the history of medieval boroughs by the king's historiographer, emphasizing the role of the crown as the basis of urban liberty. This is a very attractive copy with the gilt arms of William Lowther, 1st Earl of Lonsdale (1757-1844), and the bookplate of Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944), one of the richest men in England and a notorious spendthrift. Folio (407 x 249 mm), pp. [24], 297, [31]; 174 leaves (of 176, bound without subscriber's list). With copper-engraved initials, head- and tailpieces. Early 19th-century diced russia, rebacked and recornered to style, gilt supralibros of the Earl of Londsdale to covers, marbled endpapers and edges. Faint blindstamp of Birkbeck Library to title page. A few scuffs to covers, contents clean and bright: an excellent, tall copy. ESTC T97070. Supralibros identified as "stamp 1" for the 1st Earl by the University of Toronto's "British Armorial Bindings" project, accessible online.
