London: Alfred Holness; A. L. Allan & Son, Glasgow,, 1906. First edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Mrs. Griffin, with our kindest regards Kate Pruen". Loosely inserted is a manuscript note, expressing "so many thanks for your kind letter and order. Herewith the books, which we hope you will like". Pruen (1852-1941) served with the China Inland Mission alongside her husband, the medical doctor William Langford Pruen (1855-1934). Griffin was most likely a missionary acquaintance from the Pruens' China days, as several are recorded by that name in contemporary missionary directories. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece showing Chinese coins and 11 plates. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front board with gilt plant vignette incorporating the Pruen motto. Cloth and gilt bright, indentation on front board: a near-fine copy.
