SHANGHAI.

Shanghai: Whangpoo Conservancy Board,, 1923. Protecting Shanghai's economic future First edition, traced in four institutions worldwide, of this survey of Shanghai's main economic artery. Established in 1906, the Whangpoo Conservancy Board (formerly the Whangpoo River Conservancy) monitored tides and discharge and undertook improvement works to guarantee the river's long-term viability for shipping. Its activities were financed by the Boxer Indemnity and taxes levied on imports and exports. The map, extending from Fengjing and Hangzhou Bay to the Yangtze, was prepared from 1922 data by Y. Utne, who joined the conservancy board in the early 20th century as an assistant surveyor and remained with the organization until the outbreak of the Second World War. Copies can be found at the British Library, Library of Congress, University of Illinois, and University of California Berkeley. Colour lithographed map (1075 x 1515 mm), key in bottom left corner. Map bright, small losses and splits along folds expertly repaired on verso, creased and bowed where previously folded and rolled, short closed tears in margins (not crossing neatline), areas of soiling and ink patches on verso: a very good example.
