Inscribed with annotated photos by the author First edition, first printing, of the author's first book, presentation copy with a lengthy inscription and a comical sketch by the author to Louis and Adele Auchincloss, with eight annotated photographs by Beard pasted onto the front pastedown and free endpaper. The inscriptions is as follows, "To Mr & Mrs Auchincloss, Sept 19th, 1990, anyone who has been to Ferguson's gulf and appreciated it, (110 or not) has my vote. You have more than that. Your diary is pure genius & a wonderful achievement - next time however you must stay with me & our warthogs on Hog Ranch (Langata) (luxury tents with 'Kamante' supervising). Until then all best wishes and warm regards! Sincerely Peter. P.O. 4191 Nairobi, Kenya". The sketch shows a man swimming away from a crocodile, and is titled "Fergies Gulf". In his inscription, Beard is praising Louis Auchincloss's Diary of a Yuppie (1986). There are addditionally six photographs and a postcard pasted onto the rear free endpaper and pastedown, including a portrait of Karen Blixen and Beard. Loosely inserted are a photograph of Blixen and a post card (both with a note from Beard on the verso) and a photo of Beard and Kamante, housed in a separate envelope. This seminal work of African photography was 10 years in the making and casts a photographic eye over wildlife conservation in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. Octavo. Black and white and colour photographs throughout. Original grey cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Spine rubbed to foot of spine; jacket unclipped, head of spine rubbed: a very good copy in like jacket. Roth 101, p. 170.
