Inscribed with a drawing to a childhood friend First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by Dalí across the verso of the front free endpaper and the facing page in Catalan, "Per en Josep Xirau, qui un del primer xicits de Tudela, con abraçades den [one of the first children of Tudela, with hugs from], Dalí 1962", and with two ink sketches: one of Don Quixote, and the other of Dalí and Josep walking into the mountainous landscape of Tudela in the Cap de Creus national park. This copy is also inscribed by Descharnes on the half-title in French, "Pour Monsieur Joseph Xirau, hommage te 'amical de [a friendly tribute from], Robert Descharnes". The recipient was the Catalan lawyer and politician Josep Xirau i Palau, who founded the Socialist Union of Catalonia. Dalí was a childhood friend of the Xirau family and painted portraits of several family members, including Josep's brothers, the philosopher Joaquim, and the chemist Joan. Quarto. Text in French. Colour illustrations throughout, many images tipped in. Original grey cloth, front cover and spine lettered in brown. With dust jacket. Spine lightly bumped; price-clipped dust jacket with light wear at corners, small tape repair at head of spine panel: a very good copy in good dust jacket.
