A collection of musings, quotes and aphorisms based on the figure of Palinurus, the pilot of Aeneas' ship in Virgil's Aeneid. Using the metaphor of this character, who fell overboard to atone for his deeds and whose spirit wanders the underworld, Connolly assesses his own personal journey on the brink of turning 40. The book is divided into four sections, with the third containing thinly-veiled references to the author's life in France, and the epilogue examining the myth from both historical and psychological aspects. Together with Enemies of Promise -which was published several years prior and outlines the author's observations about English Literature and writing - The Unquiet Grave is the work for which Connolly is best remembered.
