The story follows Jeanette, a young girl brought up by a zealous mother who believes her life is intended for missionary work, but who falls for one of the coverts and leaves behind her family and home for the woman she loves. Winterson later stated that her mother wrote her a "furious note" upon publication. Oranges are not the Only Fruit won the Whitbread Award for a First Novel in the year of publication. . Very Good.
