A Confederate General from Big Sur.

BRAUTIGAN, Richard.

New York: Grove Press, Inc.,, 1964 [1965]. A rare signed copy First edition, first printing, of the author's first published novel, signed and dated by him on the front free endpaper on 18 December 1967, shortly after the publication of his breakthrough book, Trout Fishing in America. Trout Fishing was the first novel Brautigan finished writing, but A Confederate General was published first as it was considered a more traditional novel and therefore more likely to be a commercial success. While largely dismissed on publication, it is "probably Brautigan's funniest book; at its best Confederate General might be described as a comic burlesque of 'America After the War Between the States'" (Malley, p. 91). Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in silver. With dust jacket. Tiny mark to spine, foot gently bumped, spine and upper edges faintly sunned; jacket unclipped, foot of spine panel creased, flap folds foxed: a near-fine copy in like jacket. Terence Malley, Richard Brautigan, 1972.
