This enduringly valuable history covers commerce, currency, extraterritoriality, expatriate social life, and even smuggling. The plans present Shanghai as it appeared in the mid-19th century, as well as the layout of the first British consulate and the anchorage at Suzhou Creek. Lanning and Couling (1859-1922) were veteran foreign residents of the city. An educator, Lanning ran a boys' school for several decades. His co-author was a missionary, as well as a correspondent of Sir Aurel Stein - Couling's collection of ancient Chinese oracle bones was purchased by the British Museum in 1911. Octavo. Folding frontispiece showing panorama of Bund, 6 plates, 5 folding plans. Original black morocco-grain cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, front board panelled in blind. Spine rubbed, boards bright, joints expertly repaired, plates and plans well preserved: a very good copy.
