Psychopathia sexualis.

KRAFFT-EBING, Richard von.

Stuttgart: Verlag von Ferdinand Enke,, 1886. The foundational work of sexology First edition, rare in commerce, of the German psychiatrist Krafft-Ebing's groundbreaking work, describing 45 clinical cases of what he classified as deviancy, in which such sexual practices as homosexuality, sadism, masochism, and fetishism were defined in psychiatric terms for the first time. Intending it to be a forensic reference book for psychiatrists, physicians, and judges, Krafft-Ebing deliberately chose a scientific term for his title and used Latinate expressions to deter lay readers. After its small initial print run, the work became increasingly popular and expanded in successive editions, so that the final, posthumously published edition of 1903 contains 238 case histories. Freud's Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1906) is notably indebted to Krafft-Ebing's work. Octavo. Contemporary German brown half cloth, patterned paper sides, hand-written paper spine label, Berlin bookbinder's ticket of R. Schäfer, S. Kommandantenstr. 45. Early ownership blindstamp of German medical practitioner Dr M. Bartels. A touch of wear to board edges, very good.
