London: George Cruikshank,, 1836. Cruikshank teaches the alphabet First edition, first issue (reissued coloured in 1837, and again without a date by Tilt and Bogue). A scarce and charming Cruikshank publication, produced to aid children in learning the alphabet, illustrated in Cruikshank's instantly recognizable style. Sextodecimo. Fold-out sheet of letters, each with a word and vignette by Cruikshank. Original boards, rebacked with original spine laid down, printed decorative title to front cover and portrait of the bookseller Charles Tilt to rear cover. Early ownership signature to front pastedown. Light rubbing to binding, still a fresh copy of a fragile volume, the contents clean without repair to folds, small chip at foot of final leaf.
