CLARKE, Edward Daniel - OTTER, William.

London: Printed for George Cowie and Co.,, 1824. Professor of Mineralogy First edition of this biography of Clarke by his lifelong friend and travelling companion William Otter (1768-1840), sometime Bishop of Chichester. The biography is the only monograph devoted to Clarke, who travelled widely throughout Europe and Asia, collecting sculpture and manuscripts as well as the geological specimens that were his academic study. It quotes his journals, his letters to his friends, and their recollections and actions after his death. Of note in the biography are the numerous references to Thomas Malthus - Clarke, Malthus, and Otter travelled to Europe together in 1799, where Malthus gathered much material for the substantially revised second edition of his Essay on Population. Malthus subscribed to three copies of the work. Quarto (269 x 214 mm). Portrait frontispiece. Contemporary half russia, spines lettered in gilt, marbled sides, endpapers, and edges. Bound without half-title. Light rubbing to covers, joints split, boards fragile but holding, tips worn, light foxing. A very good copy. Atabey 256.
