Alastair was the pseudonym of the German-born writer and illustrator Hans Henning Voigt (1887–1969). "His black and white work is very sensuous and derivative of Beardsley, his colour illustrations have more the feel of the contemporary Russian school of ballet designers" (Houfe, p. 335). The Black Sun Press was the private press of American expatriates Harry and Caresse Crosby and was one of the most exciting small presses of the 1920s and '30s. Laclos's classic 18th-century erotic novel, written in epistolary form, was first published in 1782; the translation is Ernest Dowson's version of 1898. 2 vols in bound in one, quarto.
