Paris: Black Sun Press,, 1929. Limited edition, one of 1,020, finely bound with onlay First edition illustrated by Alistair, limited issue, number 69 of 1,020 copies only. Alastair was the pseudonym of the German-born writer and illustrator Hans Henning Voigt (1887–1969). "His black and white work is very sensuous and derivative of Beardsley, his colour illustrations have more the feel of the contemporary Russian school of ballet designers" (Houfe, p. 335). The Black Sun Press was the private press of American expatriates Harry and Caresse Crosby and was one of the most exciting small presses of the 1920s and '30s. Laclos's classic 18th-century erotic novel, written in epistolary form, was first published in 1782; the translation is Ernest Dowson's version of 1898. 2 vols in bound in one, quarto. With 14 full plate illustrations by Alastair. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in green morocco, titles and decoration to spine gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, pictorial onlay after Alastair to front board with title block gilt, inner dentelles gilt, burgundy endpapers, top edge gilt.
