London: Printed at the Chiswick Press, Published by Longmans & Co.,, 1898, 1898, 1899, & 1900. First editions, first impressions, an attractive gathering in excellent condition, of these four Chiswick Press fine press publications of William Morris's lectures. Some Hints on Pattern Designing was one of two Morris works included in Printing and the Mind of Man. In the catalogue it is noted that Walter Crane wrote of Morris's far-reaching aesthetic philosophy, "if it has not turned all British craftsmen into artists or all British artists into craftsmen, it has done not little to expand and socialise the idea of art, and (perhaps it is not too much to say) has made the tasteful English house with its furniture and decorations a model for the civilised world" (PMM 367). Four works, octavo. Original holland boards with cloth spines and blue paper over boards, titles to front boards in black. With parts of the original plain dust jackets laid in at the rear of each vol. Cover of first three titles lightly toned, the fourth almost as new, some staining to board edges of Some Hints on Pattern Designing, all sound and internally clean, generally excellent condition. PMM 367.
