[Bologna: Per Giuseppe Lucchesini,, 1813]. Important scholarship on Fibonacci First edition of Guglielmini's lecture on Leonardo Pisano, better known today by his nickname Fibonacci, albeit a nickname which would not be invented by Guillaume Libri for another two decades. Fibonacci was the most influential of the Western mathematicians of the Middle Ages, popularising the system of Arabic numerals, and introducing to Europe what is now known as the Fibonacci sequence. Giovanni Battista Guglielmini (1763-1817) was professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna, where he delivered the present lecture in 1812, and is best known today for his experiments demonstrating the earth's rotation. This lecture, highly laudatory, was one of the most important developments in the scholarship on Fibonacci - Guglielmini presented substantial documentation on Fibonacci's life and work, and for the first time placed it in a cultural and historical context. The book is uncommon, with WorldCat listing 16 copies worldwide. Octavo (220 x 153 mm). Uncut in original blue paper wrappers. Manuscript shelf label to spine. Spine a little sunned, some faint foxing. A very good copy in the fragile original wrappers.
