Notes for Officers appointed to East Africa and Uganda.

COLONIAL OFFICE.

  • Published: 1914 , London: Waterlow & Sons Limited,
London: Waterlow & Sons Limited,, 1914. Third edition, with the bookplate of (W.) Harold Ingrams, the noted colonial officer who wrote a similar handbook for officers on Zanzibar and was known as a "charming, genial, humorous, and a slightly eccentric 'character'" (ODNB). Also with the ownership inscription of the novelist Alan Sillitoe to the front free endpaper. All iterations are rare, with three copies of a 1912 printing in libraries, and none of this edition. The book was intended to prepare officer for life in East Africa proffering such advice as "a sun-helmet should always be worn between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m" (p. 40), "hot baths are both stimulating and refreshing" (p. 42), and "Heavy drinkers should not go to East Africa or Uganda; moderate drinkers should be very moderate there and total abstainers should remain so" (p. 45). The longest and most insistent section is dedicated to the prevention of malaria and the use of mosquito nets. Small octavo. 3 plates including half tone photographic images of disease carrying insects and a mosquito net. Original green cloth, front cover lettered in gilt. Spine weak and boards a little loose but holding, insect damage to the upper tip, covers a little rubbed and marked, text block lightly browned. A better than good copy.
