THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK. An Agony, in Eight Fits

THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK. An Agony, in Eight Fits

by Carroll, Lewis [pseudonym of C.L. Dodgson]
With Nine Illustrations by Henry Holiday. London: Macmillan and Co., 1876. 1 page undated ads. Original deep red cloth pictorially decorated in black, all page edges gilt. First Edition, special dark-red binding, which consisted of 100 copies. This is a poetical nonsense tale, both funny and subtle, that "describes with infinite humour the impossible voyage of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature" [WM&G]. The crew consists of a Bellman, a Bonnet-Maker, a Barrister, a Broker, a Billiard-Maker, a Banker, a Butcher, a Baker, a Beaver and (the only one not illustrated) "a Boots." In his dedicatory verse to Gertrude Chataway, Carroll hid the child's name twice. Standard copies were issued in buff-colored cloth (with the same elaborate pictorial decoration, but in black). According to WM&G, "It is doubtful whether any variant coloured bindings were for sale, other than buff or red; the other colours seem to have been bound specially for Dodgson, who wrote to Macmillan on 21 Mar. 1876 ordering: '100 in red and gold, 20 in dark blue and gold, 20 in white vellum and gold'." (Dodgson had a few others bound just for himself, possibly in light blue, light green and dark green.) This is a very good-plus copy, with (as usual) some wear at the spine ends; the covers have some rubbing, but the original endpapers are not cracked at all. In all, this is an attractive book, with the gilt standing out well against this dark red cloth. Williams Madan & Green 115. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Original artwork for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland:

Original artwork for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: "A Mad Tea Party".

by PARKS, Phil (illus.); CARROLL, Lewis.
1995. First published within Firsts magazine for December 1995 to accompany Benjamin Harder's article, "Illustrating Alice". Phil Parks is a contemporary illustrator of horror novels and is particularly known for illustrating work by Dean Koontz, the American fantasy author. Original published artwork for Lewis Carroll's novel is not common. Harder stated that "the mass of Alice illustrators forms an unsteady but discernible pyramid. There are a few at the top who have created great works of art; a step down there are a handful of wizards who have managed interesting twists on the originals; and below them are the many who have turned out respectable, if uninspired, editions". The magazine Firsts - Collecting Modern First Editions commissioned Parks to provide a new illustration of the "Mad Tea-Party" featuring Alice, the March Hare, the Dormouse, and the Hatter from the seventh chapter of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Original drawing (455 x 340 mm) with decorative border (508 x 392 mm) on thin card (610 x 482 mm), ink and graphite, unsigned, mounted, framed and glazed (glazed size 742 x 625 mm). Fine condition. ALICE IN WONDERLAND PANORAMA WITH MOVEABLE PICTURES

ALICE IN WONDERLAND PANORAMA WITH MOVEABLE PICTURES

by Carroll, Lewis; Bowley, A. L.
London: Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd, 1910. Very good plus.. First edition of this charming panorama of Alice's Wonderland adventures, with character cutouts to tuck into slots and rearrange the story however you like - rarely found complete. A. L. Bowley worked on a number of titles for Raphael Tuck, including this dynamic take on Lewis Carroll's beloved story. The instructions to the rear encourage readers to switch up the placement of the figures - which include the White Rabbit, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts, and Alice herself - in order to make their own version of the story. Its many moveable parts means that this panorama is unusual to find complete and intact, as this copy is. A beautiful Alice. 10.5'' x 47.5'' (unfolded); 10.5'' x 12'' (folded). Original color pictorial self wrapper. Illustrated in color on one side, black and white on the other. 15 color figures, complete. Four panels, folded concertina-style, with pocket to rear. Some edgewear and light soil to outside, a few closed tears and careful repairs. Several interior slots with closed tears, but sound. Colors bright. [Attributes: First Edition]

Publisher's decorative light tan boards with illustrations by Holiday in black, lettered in black, all edges gilt, black endpapers. Near fine, with a touch of soiling to front board, moderate toning to spine, a touch of wear to the upper spine, tiny bookseller's embossed stamp to front free endpaper, and light offsetting from emblem on half-title page. Overall, an attractive copy, rarely found in such nice condition. Taylor 382.In this poem, Carroll returns to the setting of "Jabberwocky," the nonsense poem that was published as part of his 1872 novel Through the Looking Glass, and What Alice Found There. Specifically, "The Hunting of the Snark" tells the story of ten sailors, each of whose name begins with the letter B, who are in search of a fearsome creature known as the "snark" which they fear may be an especially dangerous sort known as a "boojum." Like "Jabberwocky," this poem is filled with fantastical adventures, impossible scenarios, and gibberish words. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

JABBERWOCKY.

by Carroll, Lewis
Decorah, IA: Solmentes Press, 2020. Solmentes Press. 8.5 x 5.5 inches. pastepaper boards, with a leather spine, presented in a cloth-covered drop-back box. 60 pages. First edition limited to 35 copies (although '40 copies' is stated on the limitation page), of which this is one of thirty regular copies. The book comes with a metallic paper inserted into a paper folder which is used to help read the poem. In Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass, Alice climbs through a mirror into another world and finds many strange things: "There was a book lying near Alice on the table . . . she turned over the leaves to find some part that she could read, for its all in some language I dont know, she said to herself. She puzzled over this for some time, but at last a bright thought struck her. Why, its a Looking-glass book, of course! And if I hold it up to a glass, the words will all go the right way again. This was the poem that Alice read: *in reverse* Jabberwocky 'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe Esslemont has illustrated the poem with linocuts, creating unique images, ignoring Sir John Tenniels original drawings and Humpty Dumptys later explanation of the meaning of such words as "brillig", "toves" and "borogroves". However, they transpire to be quite similar to Humptys notions . . . . The 26 linocuts are mostly color reduction linocuts - they are printed from the same block cut several times. Esslemont identifies the narrator in the poem with simple black and white illustrations. The calligraphic text was drawn with a broad-nibbed pen on linoleum blocks that when printed render the letters in reverse, just as Alice found them. It seems very pretty, she said when she had finished it, but its rather hard to understand! (You see she didnt like to confess, even to herself, that she couldnt make it out at all.) Somehow it seems to fill my head with ideas only I dont exactly know what they are! However, somebody killed something: thats clear, at any rate.
