ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS. And what Alice found there.

by CARROLL. LEWIS. ; Tenniel. John. Illustrates.
Macmillan and Co. Limited. London. 1898, 1898. FIRST SIXPENNY EDITIONS. 1st printing. 8vo. (8.4 x 6 inches). Both volumes are the first printings of the Macmillan sixpenny series. Illustrated with forty two and fifty line illustrations, respectively, by John Tenniel. Publishers original red printed paper wraps. Page edges a bit chipped, as to be expected with the cheap paper used in production, and a little toned but overall these are very good internally. The front paper wraps for both volumes and only the rear for Alice are present. Both paper spines have perished. Ink stamp of previous owner to the front wrapper of each volume. While not the most attractive example, these two First printings of the sixpenny series are a rare survivor with their original fragile wraps and not in too bad condition for 1898 paperback Children's books. Alice's Adventures in Philco Land [Cover Title: Philco Refrigerators and Freezers for 1948]

by [Alice's Adventures in Wonderland] [Lewis Carroll] [Vintage Advertising] [Kitchen Appliances] [Catalog]
Philco Corporation, 1948. [48pp] Folio [38 cm] Black cloth spine with an internal spiral binding and paper over boards (title and small illustration on the front board). The covers are worn. The lower thirds of the pages are moisture damaged. The moisture staining is light, however roughly a dozen of the pages have areas of abrasion which obscure portions of the text. With a folding 3-page illustration at the center. An oversized dealer catalog for Philco sales associates. The Philco Corporation was originally known as the Philadelphia Storage Battery Company. Philco was a brand name that contributed advancements to modern appliances and technology, such as inventing the car radio and wall-powered sockets for home radios. The company was purchased by Ford in 1961, sold to GTE in 1974, and ultimately purchased by Philips in 1981. The "Alice in Wonderland" theme is represented throughout. In addition to Alice, the catalog features Humpty Dumpty, Mad Hatter, Tweedledum & Tweedledee, the White Rabbit, the Walrus, the King and Queen of Hearts, and the Duchess. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND and THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

by CARROLL, Lewis; pseudonym of DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge; illustrated by PEAKE, Mervyn
Stockholm: Zephyr Books, Continental Book Co. 1946. First Mervyn Peake illustrated edition. First Mervyn Peake illustrated edition. Original grey pictorial card covers printed in blue and red, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with line drawings by Mervyn Peake throughout. A superb near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing to the spine tips and some minimal wear to edges and corners. The contents, with a few very tiny spots to the text block edges and a little dustiness to the bottom corner of the text block, are clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper, the lettering to the lightly toned spine moderately faded. A lovely copy.A beautiful example of the first Mervyn Peake illustrated edition preceding the UK Alan Wingate issued edition by eight years. Upon publication of this edition, Frances Sarzano, biographer of John Tenniel, wrote that "[e]ven Tenniel-charmed eyes should be captivated by the unfamiliar Walrus and the Carpenter, by the Sorry White Knight (who pleads for a Peake 'Don Quixote'), by the Mad Hatter and the Duchess's choleric child, but sadly enough, it will be at least two years [as stated above, it was eight] before this Peake Alice can be published in England, owing to the artist's contracts with English publishers."
