The Shining

King, Stephen

  • Publisher: Doubleday & Company
  • Published: 1977 , New York
  • Condition: Very Good
First edition, first impression: Garden City, New York: Doubleday & Company, 1977. "First Edition" stated to the copyright page, with the code R49 present in the gutter of page 447. Octavo. Original quarter-black cloth over tan boards, the spine lettered in gilt with white endpapers and paste-downs. With the original pictorial dust jacket, illustration by Dave Christensen and typography by Al Nagy, unclipped and priced $8.95 to the front flap. Very good or better: a little faint toning and spotting to the top edge and fore-edge; mild rubbing to the spine tips; a small knock to the bottom edge of the lower board. Contents and boards otherwise clean and fresh. The dust jacket very good, with a touch of rubbing to the corners and spine tips, a hint of the usual sunning to the spine panel, and a couple of tiny nicks to the top edge and spine foot. King's third published novel and his first hardcover bestseller, following "Carrie" (1974) and "Salem's Lot" (1975), and the book that established him as the pre-eminent writer in the genre. Stanley Kubrick's film adaptation followed in 1980; King, dissatisfied with it, wrote and closely supervised a second adaptation as an ABC miniseries in 1997, and returned to Danny Torrance in the sequel "Doctor Sleep" (2013).
