A fine copy, the binding square and firm with bright gilt; slight dustiness to the top edge, as noted, with the contents otherwise clean and crisp throughout. Inscribed by the author on the title page in the year and month of publication: "For Liz, with all good things - John le Carré, 15 Jul '93." The dust jacket fine, unclipped, remaining vibrant and sharp, with no fading, wear, or marks. Le Carré's first major post-Cold War novel, shifting his focus from Soviet espionage to the world of illegal arms dealing and institutional corruption. The novel's antagonist, the arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper, drew in part on le Carré's own father, Ronnie Cornwell, a conman and fraudster whose criminal history and personal magnetism le Carré wrote about elsewhere in his own memoirs and interviews. The book was adapted as an award-winning BBC/AMC television serial in 2016.
