Study: 61 pp, 3 tipped-in plates. 92 plates, 91 printed from the original wood blocks engraved by the Brothers Dalziel from drawings by Sir John Tenniel and one print from an electrotype. The plates, laid loose in individual card folders with printed captions, are in solander boxes. The boxes are bound with quarter dark red morocco over grey cloth, with black leather title labels and gilt lettering to spines. The accompanying study of the illustrations by Leo John De Freitas is bound in grey cloth with a black leather title label to the board and gilt lettering. This and the solander boxes are contained within a cloth-covered slipcase. All are very clean and fresh, in near fine condition, with only very slight rubbing to the spines of the boxes, where the colour is slightly lighter than the rest of the morocco. Page insert to accompanying study taken from Bandersnatch (1997), the newsletter of The Lewis Carroll Society, featuring a report on a lecture given by Dr de Freitas. De Freitas, who has written on some of the world's best ever illustrators and is an authority on British wood engraving, investigates wood engraving and its survival, before focusing on the production of the Tenniel illustrations. Printed by Jonathan Stephenson at The Rocket Press, Blewbury, Oxfordshire. The ninety-one wood engravings and one electrotype (Alice and the Dodo) were printed using a hand-fed precision proofing press. This is a heavy item and may require additional postage if being shipped outside of Europe. 0333422074 . Near Fine. 1/4 Morocco. Limited Edition. 1988.
