Alt Berlin - Neu Berlin

BERLIN - ADVERTSING

  • Published: ca 1895 , Neuruppin
BERLIN - ADVERTISING. Alt Berlin - Neu Berlin. Handkerchief, printed in colour lithography on cotton. [Neuruppin, ca. 1895.] Printed cotton handkerchief (370 x 370mm), printed in blue, green, red and black; old folds, a little dusty in places. A very rare survival, a souvenir handkerchief celebrating the 'new' Berlin symbolised by the Reichstag, which had been opened in 1894 and commemorating old buildings of the German capital, which were soon replaced during the building boom of the last years of the century. The printing might have been done in Neuruppin, a garrison town not far from Berlin which was well known for its printers of popular imagery, mainly carried out by the companies Gustav Kühn and Oehmigke & Riemschneider.

I specialize in printed books and manuscripts in the humanities, with a special emphasis on the quirky, unusual and the beautiful. My stock is particularly strong on the European Enlightenment and the early industrial revolution, its philosophy, impact on commerce and everyday life, technological developments, and view of women.I am also interested in the practical production of books and the distribution texts, and thus offer printer's and engraving manuals, books on copyright laws or censorship, and early library or publisher's catalogues. I issue regular illustrated and fully annotated catalogues and exhibit a major international book fairs.
