Nineteenth century brown morocco, bevelled edges, gilt box design by Thomson of Edinburgh ca. 1890, some edge rubbing. Spine, gilt tooling & titles, edges worn. Internally, title leaf, followed by 26 illustrations of costumes, numbered & mounted, mounted, 1 to a leaf, each with a guard, marbled end-papers, a.e.g., some plates have light stains, 1 plate loose at head, some have old glue marks showing through, a few with minor tears, binders stamp to fpd, But Very Good. (216*140 mm). "It is not possible to apportion these prints, usually found separate or in haphazard collections, to these different issues, and indeed there seem to be very few, two or three, states of these prints. Sets as issued are of the greatest rarity. The bound sets found today are all apparently collectors' or booksellers' bindings, often with no necessary connection between the prints and the title. The two or three states here listed are not, therefore, attributed to any particular issue. These prints are in later states and the presence of the date on the title tends to place them after 1717 and possibly from the issue of Robert Sayer in 1755. It just as equally could be a made up set such as those described by Pennington. In any case these are an especially fine set of costume plates done by the best Anglo-Dutch engraver of the seventeenth century in contemporary form and highly desirable. Paartington p292.
