London, James Virtue, [c.1861]. . 2 volumes in 1, 4to., 2 engraved titles with pictorial vignettes, 131 engraved plates, 6 maps, printed title to volume II only, original green cloth gilt decorated in gilt and black, all edges gilt, light waterstain to covers, inner hinges strengthened, a little light marginal waterstain to some plates but generally clean and fresh, a very good copy. The plates are after drawings by William Brockendon, W.H. Barlett and other. Born in Ireland, Costello was a soldier, journalist and artist. Trained at Sandhurst he served in India, North America and the West Indies, before leaving the army and moving to Paris where he spent subsequent years as an artist and journalist.
