The youngest daughter of William IV and the actress Dorothea Jordan, Amelia Carey married the colonial administrator Viscount Falkland in 1830 and accompanied him to India in 1848 after he was made Governor of Bombay. Carey's 'Chow-Chow' (i.e. 'oriental mishmash') is full of entertaining as well as informative tid-bits and anecdotes on life in Bombay, and she did plenty of solo trekking and travelling, especially into the Deccan. When the Falklands journeyed home in 1853 Carey's enjoyment of travelling led them to take a long sight seeing route through Egypt, Syria, and the Holy land which is also related in the second half of the book.
