The Snows of Tibet Through China.

PRATT, A. E.

  • Published: 1892 , London: Longmans, Green, and Co.,
London: Longmans, Green, and Co.,, 1892. First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Henry Cockburn Esq. With A. E. Pratt's sincere regards, April 16th 1892." Cockburn (1859-1927) served as the British vice-consul in Chongqing and is thanked in the preface. Pratt named the plant Primila Cockburniana partly in his honour. The Snows of Tibet recounts an expedition undertaken in the late 1880s, during which Pratt (1852-1924), a naturalist and fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, followed the Yangtze upriver in an attempt to reach Tibet. The text makes several references to Cockburn's kind hospitality in Chongqing ("this disagreeable place" - p. 89). Born in Calcutta, Cockburn had served in China for 25 years, including as consul-general in Beijing. Following the Boxer Rebellion, he helped negotiate the Mackay Treaty. Octavo. Half-tone frontispiece (with tissue guard) after photograph of author in Chinese dress, 29 plates, folding colour map. Original blue diagonal-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards panelled in blind, front cover with gilt vignette of birds, black coated endpapers, edges untrimmed. Spine toned, marking to boards, hinges starting, rear map toned and brittle where incorrectly refolded, part of word "April" in inscription faded: an acceptable copy. Troelstra, pp. 343-4.
