THE YOUNG DUKE.

[DISRAELI, Benjamin, First Earl of Beaconsfield, 1804-1881] :

  • Publisher: London : Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, 1831.
London : Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley, 1831. First edition. Disraeli's intriguing early novel of high society - "all rings, ringlets, and a little rouge" - a wastrel redeemed by the love of a good woman, etc., but also the novel in which we first see the evolution of Disraeli's politics and what was soon to become his particular brand of one-nation conservatism. Three volumes. Medium 12mo (195 x 115mm). iv,300; [ii],(270),[ii]; [ii],(266)pp. Bound, without the half-titles to vols ii & iii and a final advertisement leaf, in an elegant, slightly later, half blue-black morocco, banded and gilt; top edges gilt; marbled sides and endpapers; some rubbing, slight scuffing and mild wear; a couple of short splits; internally some occasional faint marks and mild tanning, but overall a very good and handsome set. With the nautical bookplate of the collector and pharmacist Robert James Hayhurst (1929-2016) in the first volume. Sadleir 738.
