copper engraved map with old colouring; overall 37 x 47 cm, plate 32 x 45 cm. fold as issued; centrefold reinforced/ repaired; right lower margin re-enforced; edges slightly frayed; some soft creases; some slight browning, soiling; on verso: red ink stamp, slightly shining through on recto; top right corner blue ink stain; o/w vg cond. One of the most sought after plates from Ogilby's Britannia: this is plate no. 1 which shows one of the earliest depictions of a waywiser, an instrument for measuring distances. It covers the route from London to Abersytwyth via Harrow, Uxbridge, Amersham, Beaconsfield, High Wickham, Oxford and Islip. The route to Aberystwyth is completed on two following sheets though each map can stand on its own. Ogilby (1600-1676) was a Scottish translator and cartographer who is best known for publishing the first British strip road atlas.

All items are original engravings – I do not sell reproductions – and are as described and in good condition unless otherwise stated. Great care has been taken to describe all flaws which might lead to overstating any faults. However, should you not be satisfied with your purchase, please return within 7 working days, and as long as the item is returned in the same condition and packed, insured and shipped correctly, a refund will be made in full. Please note that delivery costs will be refunded in full; this, however, does not apply to any express delivery costs that the buyer expressively chose.
