A very rare pictorial map of the Czech Republic! Vančura, B. Mapa sportovního rybářství a lovné ryby v českých řekách (The map of sport fishing and game fish in Czech rivers.) 1953 chromolithography; overall 68 x 92 cm, image 60 c 84 cm. folds as issued; top corners missing; some minor marginal tears; two larger tear, repaired with archival tape; some small holes in cross folds; some soft creases; on verso: some soiling and dusting; hand written annotation (address of previous owner); o/w vg cond. One of the most charming and highly decorative pictorial maps I have ever come across! This delightful and very rare map shows sport fishing in Czechoslovakia/ Czechia published in 1953 by B.Vančura who signed the map in the lower margin in pencil. The map portrays the region of Bohemia and its principal rivers with many illustrations of fishermen, and is surrounded by 20 beautiful illustrations of various indigenous fish species with Latin and Czech names. Each fish is numbered and the numbers are shown on the map where the species can be found. There are further illustrations of fishing flies, a sea gull, two fishermen relaxing and a compass rose, a king fisher and various fishing implements. In the top border, there is a depiction of a green figure who might refer to the tale which is in the middle of the lower border: "While all others were eating fish, Paleček [a tiny boy from a Czech traditional tale whose name can be translated as "A small Thumb"] was putting them close to his ear. When Václav [the King] asked him what it is he would like to know from them, Paleček said: "I am asking them about my drowned brother, but they say they don't know anything because they are too young. If only I could talk to some older ones like those on your plate…". The king Václav smiled and gave his fish to Paleček."
