Logical Nonsense: The Works of Lewis Carroll. Now, For the First Time, Complete

by CARROLL, Lewis; BLACKBURN, Philip C. & WHITE, Lionel (eds.)
G. P. Putnam's Sons, New York, 1934. xiii, 568 p. 26 cm. Burgundy leather with gold trim. Wrapped in clear mylar (removed for photo). Some wear to leather at spine head. Front hinge cracking internally. A few rough edges when pages cut. Pencil ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Small stain to inner margins of Preface-Introduction p. xi. This edition not in the Lewis Carroll Handbook (1979). The limitation is unusual; numbered copies are certainly available but this one is lettered, suggesting that the 125 copies might consist of 99 numbered copies for sale and 26 lettered copies for presentation. An excellent chronological arrangement of all of Carroll's writings collected into one volume. Biography, bibliography and index. 125 copies, signed by both editors, of which this is copy "L". The Nursery 'Alice' Containing Twenty Coloured Enlargements from Tenniel's Illustrations to 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' with Text Adapted to Nursery Readers. The Cover Designed and Coloured by E. GERTRUDE THOMSON. Price One Shilling.

by CARROLL, Lewis [DODGSON, Charles Lutwidge].
Macmillan. London Second edition. 4to, 1890. pp. (viii), 56, (i) [TURN OVER], (iii) An Easter Greeting, (i) Christmas Greetings, (ii) Advertisements, (i) Specimen Page. Coloured frontispiece and 19 coloured text illustrations by TENNIEL. White cloth spine unlettered, coloured pictorial boards [the front board signed by Thomson, the rear board with a central vignette of the March Hare initialled by Thomson - in both cases the original owner has gone to the trouble of erasing the Thomson signatures very carefully but has left a portion of the letter 'E' on the front board and by the position of the erasures indicating what has happened], without the front free end-paper, the tissue guard to the frontispiece torn at attachment without loss, the first 8 pages have a few light pencil underlines and the odd marginal note, the covers are scuffed and worn at spine ends and corners, some margins have marks, clearly a used but decent copy. *This copy is printed on white, rather than toned, paper; the price of 'Four Shillings' above the imprint is changed to 'One Shilling' [though the Advertisement at the back of the book still announces 'Four Shillings'], the illustration on page 34 of Alice and the Cheshire Cat shows Alice with her back towards the reader and not in profile. The Hunting of the Snark an Agony in Eight Fits. With nine illustrations by Henry Holiday.

The Hunting of the Snark an Agony in Eight Fits. With nine illustrations by Henry Holiday.

by CARROLL, Lewis.
Londra, MacMillan and Co., 1876. in-8, pp. XIV, 84, (2), con 9 tavole illustrate a piena pagina. Legatura in tela editoriale originale, color nocciola, finemente figurata in nero su entrambi i piatti, titolo sempre in nero al dorso, sguardie nere, tagli dorati. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

ALICE IN WONDERLAND: A Play

ALICE IN WONDERLAND: A Play

by [Carroll, Lewis]; Delafield, Emily Prime; [Goodhue, Bertram]
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1898. Near fine.. First printing of this beautiful adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic, with illustrations inspired by early modern woodblocks - a scarce Goodhue work in exceptional condition. With woodcut illustrations that look like an incunable had a brief but inspiring friendship with Aubrey Beardsley, ALICE IN WONDERLAND is an attractive example of Bertram Godhue's Arts and Crafts sensibilities in book form. His bright, bold aesthetic is a perfect match for Emily Prime Delafield's interpretation of ALICE, which was first presented for The Society of Decorative Art with a cast of children. This is a very nice copy, rarely found so. 8'' x 5''. Original color pictorial boards. Red and yellow pictorial endpapers of Alice characters including the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. Illustrated in black and red. 90 pages. Binding with light toning to spine, mild edgewear; one tiny spot of soil to title. Leaves with occasional faint finger soil. Bright. [Attributes: First Edition]

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

by CARROLL, Lewis; John Tenniel - illustrations
Macmillan, New York, 1877. Small octavo, 192pp., illustrated by John Tenniel. This is the first American edition under the Macmillan imprint (the true first American edition was published by Appleton). Spine gently cocked, mild discoloration to the outer joint gutters, and the page block is generally just a bit sprung. Mild wear at the crown, small area of toning to the title page at gutter (from a laid-in strip of paper), some pencil notations to title page and a few internally (all erasable with some dedication). Gift inscription dated Christmas 1877 on a front blank. With all flaws, still a near fine, better than usual copy of this early edition of Alice, which, in the same binding style and with the same illustrations, is nearly identical to the first edition. Jabberwocky (Original screenplay for the 1977 film)

by Terry Gilliam (director, screenwriter); Lewis Carroll (poem); Charles Alverson (screenwriters); Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, Dave Prowse (starring)
London: Cinema 5, 1977. Revised Final (or "Revisedish Sort of Finalish" as it's styled on the title page) British script for the 1977 comedy directed by Terry Gilliam, based on the poem by Lewis Carroll from "Through the Looking Glass" (1871). Terry Gilliam's first solo directorial effort after co-directing "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" with Terry Jones. A comedy in the Python style--and with much of the Python cast--owing much to "The Holy Grail," but with evidence of Gilliam's unique touch, which would come into full bloom with "Time Bandits" (1981) and ultimately "Brazil" (1985). Red blank wrappers with die cut title window in the British style. Title page present, noted as Revised Final, with credits for screenwriters Charles Averson and Terry Gilliam. 148 leaves, with last page of text numbered 145. Mechanical duplication, with pink and white pages throughout, undated. Pages Near Fine, wrapper lightly faded and Very Good plus, bound internally with two silver brads.

Doublets, a Word-Puzzle.

Doublets, a Word-Puzzle.

by DODGSON, C. L. (CARROLL, Lewis)
London: Macmillan and Co., 1879. FIRST EDITION. 1 volume, original publisher's blind stamped red cloth over card, title gilt to front cover, inner and outer hinges fine, Harry Elkins Widner's copy with his bookplate on the front pastedown. It was first called "Word Links", but the word "doublets" was in use from the first. It consists in connecting two doublets (words with the same number of letters, usually 3, 4, or 5) by links in which each word differs from the preceding one by one single letter only, as HEAD, heal, teal, tell, tall, TAIL. The chain in which there are fewest links gains the highest marks. The game became very popular in private circles.
