Thorolds Modern & Antiquarian Africana Books, Maps & Prints
Frank R. Thorold (Pty) Ltd. or Thorold’s Bookshop as it is affectionately known was established by Mr. Frank Thorold in 1904.  Its main source of income at the time came from Singer sewing machines, for which Mr. Thorold had the South African agency.  He found space in the corner of his shop for some books as well, and gradually grew this into Thorolds booksellers.

Following the death of Mr. Thorold in 1962, Thorold’s was bought by Mr. Robin Fryde, a world authority on Africana and who, for over fifty years successfully maintained what is considered a gem of its kind by scholars, librarians and collectors worldwide.

Sadly, Mr. Fryde passed in 2011 and Thorold’s was bought by Neillen van Kraayenburg towards the middle of 2012.  Neillen brings with him over twenty-five years of experience within the law book industry, as well as a vast knowledge of antiquarian law books and a good understanding of the second hand law book market.  He has successfully run a number of businesses over the years, including The Bookworks and Legal Library Services – the core focus of both of these businesses being the supply of both new and second hand law books.

Thorold’s Bookshop is now located in Kya Sands, Randburg, and continues to supply sought after books to amongst others the US Library of Congress, the universities of Yale, Harvard, Princeton and Wits, and most of the big legal firms in Johannesburg.

We have a spectacular collection of over 150,000 titles in stock, including: Law; Political; Africana; Travel History; Architecture; Extensive Boer War; Military; South African History; Cartography; Art; Antique Prints & Photographs.
