Flannels, Fools and Muddied OAPs

Flannels, Fools and Muddied OAPs

My business now is entirely in cricket, and several times a week I receive emails offering me three or four hundred cricket books. Sometimes they are from people who are downsizing, but more often they are from the wives or descendents of a collector, or more accurately a reader, as they tend to be full of popular books from the last forty years which sold in large quantities and have almost no value now. If I never see another book by Boycott, Bird or Botham I will be very happy.

What amazes me is the standard of spelling in these lists. Even if many of them are typed by people who do not like cricket you would think they would make some effort to check the names or titles. In the past two weeks I have been offered books by Don Bradbury (Bradman), Denise Compton (he did not have a sex change) and Gerald Howzat (Howat – the subconscious at work here). Titles offered include one written in “collabortion with MCC”, and best of all;  Flannels, Fools and Muddied OAPs. This, I am assuming, is the autobiography of Peter West, Flannelled Fools and Muddied Oafs. I prefer the amended version and hope someone gets round to writing it soon!
